Riverside police suspect impairment, high speed in crash that killed passenger

Riverside police investigators say they believe impairment and excessive speed played a role in a crash on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in which the passenger in a car died.

The collision was reported around 6:15 p.m.

Police arrived on Sycamore Canyon Boulevard near Cottonwood Avenue in Riverside and found a car that had hit a tree and had two people trapped inside.

The passenger was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said, with the driver also hospitalized; his vital signs were stable. Both were Moreno Valley residents.

The 29-year-old driver was at the wheel of a 2017 Nissan 370Z when he lost control, detectives said.

“They believe that alcohol and vehicle speed were factors in the cause of last night’s collision,” Officer Ryan Railsback, a department spokesman, said Wednesday. “The driver was still in the hospital, so they will look to see if charges are appropriate as they get further into the investigation.”
